    About Methylphenidate

Methylphenidate blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine and increases their release; how this helps ADHD is not known. Ritalin tablets and Methylin solution are labeled for ADHD in adults and children 6 and older and for narcolepsy: children start at 5 mg twice a day, before breakfast and lunch, adults usually take 20 to 30 mg a day in two or three doses, and more than 60 mg a day is not recommended. Extended-release brands are labeled for ADHD only, with label-specific ages, such as 6 to 65 for Concerta, 6 to 12 for Ritalin LA, 6 to 15 for Metadate CD and 6 to 17 for Cotempla XR-ODT and Daytrana.

The boxed warning says it has a high potential for abuse and misuse, which can lead to a substance use disorder, including addiction, and to overdose and death, a risk raised by higher doses or unapproved routes; prescribers assess each patient’s risk before and during treatment and teach safe storage and disposal. It must not be taken with, or within 14 days of, an MAO inhibitor, or by anyone allergic to it. Other warnings cover sudden death in serious heart disease, raised blood pressure and heart rate, psychotic or manic symptoms, prolonged erections, poor circulation in the fingers and toes, slowed growth in children, glaucoma and tics; Concerta, a tablet that keeps its shape, is not ordinarily used in severe narrowing of the gut. A fast heartbeat, headache, trouble sleeping, anxiety, decreased appetite, weight loss and stomach pain are common.

As a Schedule II drug it cannot be refilled; each fill needs a new prescription. With the Daytrana patch, external heat raises absorption, and skin at the site can lose its color, sometimes lastingly. Since a 2025 FDA safety communication, extended-release labels advise against use under age 6, as children that young had higher drug levels and more side effects, such as weight loss. In pregnancy, published data have not shown a drug-associated risk of major birth defects or miscarriage, though stimulants may carry fetal risks; a breastfed baby is watched for agitation, poor sleep, poor appetite and slow weight gain. In October 2026 the FDA shortage list showed the extended-release tablets (posted July 2023) and the patch (posted February 2025) as currently in shortage.

    Taking Methylphenidate

    How to take it
Tablets and solution: usually two or three times a day before meals, with an adult’s last dose before 6 p.m. if late doses disturb sleep. Swallow Concerta and Relexxii whole; let Cotempla XR-ODT dissolve on the tongue; Ritalin LA, Metadate CD, Aptensio XR and Jornay PM (taken in the evening) capsules may be opened onto applesauce. Daytrana goes on the hip 2 hours before the effect is needed and comes off 9 hours later, or sooner if advised.
    If you miss a dose
Take it when you remember unless the next dose is almost due, then skip it; ask how late in the day is too late. Jornay PM: take it that evening, or skip it if it is already morning. Never take a double dose.
    Storage
At room temperature, tightly closed, away from light, heat and moisture, in a safe place (preferably locked). Do not flush tablets or capsules; use a take-back program.
    Interactions to know about
Never with or within 14 days of an MAO inhibitor, such as linezolid or methylene blue. It can weaken blood pressure medicines and is avoided on the day of surgery with halogenated anesthetics; with risperidone, a dose change of either can bring on movement side effects.

This summarizes the official prescribing information. Your prescriber’s and pharmacist’s instructions, and the leaflet that comes with your medicine, take priority.

Why the cash price for Methylphenidate differs from pharmacy to pharmacy

Each form is a separate product: a pharmacist can substitute only a generic rated to the product written, so a Ritalin LA generic cannot fill a Metadate CD prescription, and Jornay PM, QuilliChew ER and Relexxii have no rated generic. Each pharmacy sets its own cash price, including its dispensing fee.

If a pharmacy can supply only part of the quantity, the rest can follow within 72 hours; after that a new prescription is needed.

Ways to pay less for Methylphenidate without insurance

    • Ask the prescriber to allow generic substitution rather than naming a brand only.
    • Confirm the pharmacy has your product and strength before the prescription is sent; an unfilled electronic prescription can be transferred only once.
    • Ask for a partial fill if you want fewer at first; where state law allows, the rest can follow within 30 days of the date written.
    • For Jornay PM or QuilliChew ER, ask the maker whether a savings program applies to someone paying cash.
    • Upload the prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote their cash price. You pay the pharmacy directly.

How Script Unlock gets you a cash price for Methylphenidate

Prices on this site come from pharmacies responding to a real prescription. We do not publish estimated, average or "typical" prices, because none of those would be your price.

    1. 1You upload your prescription

    2. 2Licensed pharmacies respond

Pharmacies that Script Unlock has verified see the request and each can reply with its own cash price for your exact drug, strength and quantity.

    3. 3You choose and pay the pharmacy

You compare the responses, pick a pharmacy, and pay that pharmacy directly when you collect. Script Unlock never takes a patient payment and never sets the price.
