Ritalin vs Vyvanse for ADHD: compared

Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) are stimulant ADHD medicines from different families. Methylphenidate comes in many short and long-acting forms, including a patch; Vyvanse is a once-daily capsule that turns into its active form gradually, and it is also approved for binge eating disorder.

    Two families of stimulant

Some people respond better to one family than the other, so if a methylphenidate medicine does not work or is not tolerated, an amphetamine such as Vyvanse is often tried, and the reverse. Vyvanse is a prodrug: the body converts it to its active form gradually, which gives a smooth effect through the day.

    Flexibility

Methylphenidate’s range of forms lets prescribers fine-tune timing, from short-acting tablets for a few hours to extended-release forms and a patch. Vyvanse capsules can be opened and stirred into yogurt, water or orange juice for people who cannot swallow capsules. Both are taken in the morning to protect sleep.

    Shared cautions

Both commonly reduce appetite and can cause trouble sleeping, headache and a faster heart rate or higher blood pressure, which are checked. They are not combined with MAOIs, and people with heart problems need assessment first. Both are Schedule II controlled substances: each fill needs a prescription, and they should be kept secure because they can be misused.

    Cost

Generic methylphenidate and generic lisdexamfetamine are both available, and prices vary widely with the form and between pharmacies, so compare quotes for the exact product prescribed.

    Missed doses

If a morning dose is missed, take it only if it is still early in the day, because a late dose can keep you awake at night. Never double up to make up for a missed dose.

    Questions for your prescriber

    • Which family is more likely to suit me or my child?
    • Which form fits the hours we need covered?
    • How will appetite, sleep and blood pressure be monitored?
