Your prescription. The client\u2019s choice of pharmacy. Nothing else changes.
When a client asks whether a medicine can be cheaper, Script Unlock gives them a straight answer: licensed pharmacies quote their own cash price on the prescription you wrote, and the client pays the pharmacy. No fees to you, no referral payments, no account required.
How a prescription moves through it
- 1
You write the prescription
On paper or electronically, as you would for any outside pharmacy: drug, strength, form, quantity, directions, species and weight. Nothing about your workflow changes and you need no account.
- 2
The client uploads it
A photo or PDF, with the animal’s species and weight. The request is visible only to pharmacies whose licence and ownership have been checked.
- 3
Pharmacies quote
Licensed pharmacies, including compounders and those stocking veterinary products, each respond with their own cash price for exactly what you wrote. Nobody edits the prescription.
- 4
The client chooses and pays the pharmacy
The dispensing pharmacy fills from your prescription and is paid directly by the client. Script Unlock handles no money and sells nothing.
What the dispensing pharmacy checks
The same obligations a pharmacy has for any veterinary prescription it receives. Listing them here so that what you write arrives ready to fill.
- That the prescription comes from a licensed veterinarian with a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship, under the state’s rules.
- That the dose is plausible for the species and weight stated; a pharmacist who sees an unusual dose calls the prescriber, which is why species and weight on the prescription save everyone time.
- For human-labelled drugs, that the extra-label use is one a veterinarian may direct under the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act and FDA’s regulations; the pharmacist dispenses what you wrote and labels it for the animal.
- For controlled substances, that the prescriber holds DEA registration and that the prescription meets the state’s format and electronic-prescribing requirements, which differ between states; refills and transfers are limited as for any patient.
- For compounded preparations, that the request is patient-specific and meets the conditions in FDA’s Guidance for Industry #256, and that the pharmacy is licensed for compounding in the client’s state.
Compounded preparations
What a compounder can quote on
A patient-specific prescription for a strength, form or flavour that no approved product provides: a low-strength capsule for a cat, a flavoured liquid, a transdermal methimazole gel, a xylitol-free gabapentin suspension for a dog. Under GFI #256 the preparation must not duplicate an approved drug unless there is a clinical reason for that animal, and your prescription should say what that reason is when it applies.
What stays with you
Office stock compounded from bulk substances is restricted to the substances FDA lists for that purpose, and is ordered by the practice, not through a client\u2019s request. Compounded products are not FDA-approved; stability, potency and sterility rest on the compounder, so the pharmacy\u2019s accreditation and the beyond-use date matter to the client.
Questions veterinarians ask
Does it cost a veterinarian anything?
No. Vets pay nothing and receive nothing. Pharmacies pay to use the marketplace. We do not pay referral fees, rebates or commissions to prescribers; that would be improper, and it is not how this works.
Does a client need an account?
A client can upload a prescription and receive quotes without one. An account lets them track the request and keep a record of the order.
Can I prescribe a human drug and have it filled at a human pharmacy?
Yes, under the extra-label provisions that already govern most small-animal prescribing: gabapentin, trazodone, fluoxetine, prednisolone, antibiotics, insulin, thyroid and cardiac drugs are filled by human pharmacies on veterinary prescriptions every day. The pharmacy labels the product for the animal. Veterinary-only products are dispensed by pharmacies that stock them.
What about compounding?
Compounding pharmacies quote through the marketplace like any other pharmacy. Under GFI #256, compounding from bulk substances for an individual animal is permitted when no approved drug can be used as labelled or extra-label, and the compounded product must not be a copy of an approved drug unless there is a clinical difference for that patient. Office stock from bulk substances is limited to the substances on FDA’s list. The compounder is responsible for compliance; our pharmacy checks cover licence, ownership and state authorisation.
What do you publish about prices?
Nothing. We publish no prices, no savings figures and no pharmacy counts. The quotes a client receives are private to that request, and we do not steer clients towards any pharmacy.
Can I tell a client about Script Unlock?
Yes, in the same way you would tell them they may fill a prescription at any pharmacy. A link to this site is all that is needed. Clients who ask about cost are usually relieved to hear there is a straightforward way to compare.
