Hair Loss Treatments
Minoxidil
Minoxidil comes as a topical solution and foam sold over the counter for hair loss, and as tablets originally approved for severe high blood pressure, now widely prescribed at very low doses for hair loss. The tablets are among the cheapest generics made, which is why telehealth mark-ups on them stand out.

Tablets have several manufacturers; topical products are sold over the counter under many names.
About Minoxidil
Minoxidil widens blood vessels. As a blood pressure drug it is reserved for severe hypertension that resists other treatment, given with a diuretic and a beta blocker because on its own it causes fluid retention and a fast heart rate; that use carries a boxed warning about serious heart effects. Applied to the scalp, minoxidil prolongs the growth phase of hair follicles and is approved for pattern hair loss in men and women.
Low-dose oral minoxidil, typically a fraction of the blood pressure dose, has become a common off-label treatment for hair loss in people who find the topical form messy or ineffective. At these doses the usual effects are unwanted hair growth elsewhere, mild ankle swelling, dizziness and a faster pulse, and prescribers check blood pressure and ask about chest pain or breathlessness. It is not used in pregnancy.
Either form takes several months to show results, and hair gained is lost again within months of stopping. Finasteride, for men, and spironolactone, for women, are often combined with it.
Taking Minoxidil
- How to take it
- Tablets are taken once or twice a day as prescribed, usually with other blood pressure medicines; low doses are sometimes prescribed for hair loss. The topical form is applied to a dry scalp as the product directs, and hands are washed afterward.
- If you miss a dose
- Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose; in that case skip the missed dose and carry on as usual. Never take two doses at once to make up.
- Storage
- At room temperature. Keep the topical product away from cats, for whom it is poisonous even in small amounts.
- Interactions to know about
- Tablets add to other blood pressure medicines and can cause fluid retention and a fast heart rate; report swelling, weight gain or breathlessness. Increased body hair is common.
This summarizes the official prescribing information. Your prescriber’s and pharmacist’s instructions, and the leaflet that comes with your medicine, take priority.
Why the cash price for Minoxidil differs from pharmacy to pharmacy
Minoxidil tablets cost pharmacies almost nothing; a month of low-dose treatment is a handful of tablets or tablet fractions, so the cash price at a pharmacy is the dispensing fee. Hair-loss telehealth services that bundle a consultation with the medicine charge many times that. The topical products are over-the-counter consumer items priced by brand and size.
Upload it and licensed pharmacies reply with their own cash price. You pay the pharmacy, not us.
Ways to pay less for Minoxidil without insurance
- Ask the prescriber whether a 2.5 mg tablet, split to your dose, is appropriate, and for a ninety-day prescription.
- Fill a telehealth prescription at a pharmacy of your choice rather than through the service, if it allows.
- Compare store-brand topical products with the name brands; the active ingredient is the same.
- Upload the prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote their cash price. You pay the pharmacy directly.
