Loop Diuretics
Furosemide
Furosemide (generic Lasix) is a loop diuretic that removes fluid quickly. It is used for swelling from heart failure, liver or kidney disease, and sometimes for high blood pressure. It is one of the cheapest prescription tablets.

About Furosemide
Furosemide acts on the loop of Henle in the kidney to block salt reabsorption, producing a strong diuresis within an hour of a dose that lasts about six hours. That speed makes it the standard treatment for fluid overload, and it is why doses are usually taken in the morning, and if twice daily, early afternoon, to avoid a night of urination.
It lowers potassium and magnesium, so blood tests are checked and a potassium supplement or a potassium-sparing diuretic is often prescribed alongside it. Dehydration, dizziness, and rises in uric acid and blood sugar are the other things to watch. Doses vary enormously between patients, and many people with heart failure are taught to adjust the dose to their daily weight.
An oral solution exists for people who cannot swallow tablets. Bumetanide and torsemide are related drugs sometimes used when furosemide is absorbed poorly.
Why the cash price for Furosemide differs from pharmacy to pharmacy
Furosemide costs pharmacies almost nothing, so the cash price is dispensing fee and margin. Because doses change often, patients sometimes hold several strengths, each with its own dispensing fee.
Pharmacies with a flat-price generic list almost always include furosemide; those without one can charge a surprising multiple of the drug’s cost.

Ways to pay less for Furosemide without insurance
- Ask for a ninety-day supply once your dose is stable.
- Ask whether furosemide is on the pharmacy’s flat-price generic list.
- If you take a potassium supplement as well, ask whether it is cheaper as a prescription or over the counter, and confirm the form with the prescriber.
- Compare independent and mail-order pharmacies.
- Upload your prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote their cash price. You pay the pharmacy directly.
