Pharmacy rules in Wyoming
Wyoming allows generic substitution unless the prescriber indicates otherwise, runs a prescription monitoring program through its Board of Pharmacy, does not let pharmacists prescribe contraception, and had no state insulin cap in force when this guide was checked.
Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy: licence lookup and complaintsGeneric substitution
A Wyoming pharmacist may substitute a less expensive generic equivalent unless the prescriber has indicated on the prescription, or electronically, that the brand is required. The pharmacist must tell the patient about the substitution, and the patient may refuse it and pay for the brand. Substitution follows the FDA’s therapeutic equivalence list, and interchangeable biological products may be substituted with notice to the prescriber.
Moving a prescription between pharmacies
Non-controlled prescriptions can be transferred between Wyoming pharmacies without a state limit on transfers. Refills are valid for a year from the date written. A pharmacist may dispense up to a ninety-day supply of a non-controlled maintenance medicine when the prescription allows. Check the board for the current electronic-prescribing requirements for controlled substances.
Controlled substances
Wyoming’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, run by the Board of Pharmacy, collects every controlled dispensing, and prescribers must check it before prescribing opioids and other controlled substances in most situations. Opioid prescribing for acute pain follows guidelines that favor short initial supplies. Gabapentin was not scheduled in Wyoming when this guide was checked. Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled; Schedule III to V may be refilled up to five times within six months. A Schedule II prescription may be transferred electronically once under the federal rule.
What a pharmacist can prescribe or furnish
Wyoming pharmacists may dispense naloxone, administer vaccines, and manage drug therapy under collaborative agreements with physicians. Wyoming does not let pharmacists prescribe hormonal contraception. In a state with long distances between pharmacies, many residents rely on mail order for maintenance medicines, so ask about delivery as well as price. Services vary by pharmacy.
Insulin and cost-sharing caps
Wyoming had no state insulin copay cap in force when this guide was checked. The federal Medicare Part D insulin cap applies to Part D plans, and manufacturer self-pay programs apply regardless of state. For cash-paying patients no cap applies.
Veterinary prescriptions
A veterinarian’s prescription for a human drug is filled by a Wyoming pharmacy under the same rules as any outside prescription. The Wyoming Board of Veterinary Medicine requires a veterinarian-client-patient relationship before prescribing, and veterinarians provide prescriptions on request.
