Pharmacy rules in South Dakota
South Dakota lets pharmacists provide hormonal contraception and other drug therapy under collaborative practice agreements, runs a prescription monitoring program through its Board of Pharmacy, allows generic substitution unless the prescriber indicates otherwise, and had no state insulin cap in force when this guide was checked.
South Dakota Board of Pharmacy: licence lookup and complaintsGeneric substitution
A South Dakota pharmacist may substitute a less expensive generic equivalent unless the prescriber has indicated on the prescription, or electronically, that the brand is required. The pharmacist must tell the patient about the substitution, and the patient may refuse it and pay for the brand. Substitution follows the FDA’s therapeutic equivalence list, and interchangeable biological products may be substituted with notice to the prescriber.
Moving a prescription between pharmacies
Non-controlled prescriptions can be transferred between South Dakota pharmacies without a state limit on transfers. Refills are valid for a year from the date written. A pharmacist may dispense up to a ninety-day supply of a non-controlled maintenance medicine when the prescription allows. Check the board for the current electronic-prescribing requirements for controlled substances.
Controlled substances
South Dakota’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, run by the Board of Pharmacy, collects every controlled dispensing and is available to prescribers and pharmacists before prescribing or dispensing. Opioid prescribing for acute pain follows guidelines that favor short initial supplies. Gabapentin was not scheduled in South Dakota when this guide was checked. Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled; Schedule III to V may be refilled up to five times within six months. A Schedule II prescription may be transferred electronically once under the federal rule.
What a pharmacist can prescribe or furnish
South Dakota pharmacists can provide hormonal contraception and manage other drug therapy under collaborative practice agreements with prescribers, an arrangement the state has allowed for decades, and may dispense naloxone and administer vaccines. Each service depends on the pharmacy having the agreement in place, so ask.
Insulin and cost-sharing caps
South Dakota had no state insulin copay cap in force when this guide was checked. The federal Medicare Part D insulin cap applies to Part D plans, and manufacturer self-pay programs apply regardless of state. For cash-paying patients no cap applies.
Veterinary prescriptions
A veterinarian’s prescription for a human drug is filled by a South Dakota pharmacy under the same rules as any outside prescription. The South Dakota Animal Industry Board and the veterinary board require a veterinarian-client-patient relationship before prescribing, and veterinarians provide prescriptions on request.
