Pharmacy rules in Louisiana
Louisiana allows generic substitution unless the prescriber indicates the brand is required, limits first opioid prescriptions for acute pain to seven days, requires a check of its monitoring program before many controlled prescriptions, caps insulin cost-sharing on state-regulated plans, and does not let pharmacists prescribe contraception.
Louisiana Board of Pharmacy: licence lookup and complaintsGeneric substitution
A Louisiana pharmacist may substitute a generic equivalent unless the prescriber has indicated on the prescription, or electronically, that the brand is required. The pharmacist must tell the patient about the substitution, and the patient may refuse it and pay for the brand. Substitution follows the FDA’s therapeutic equivalence list, and interchangeable biological products may be substituted with notice to the prescriber.
Moving a prescription between pharmacies
Non-controlled prescriptions can be transferred between Louisiana pharmacies without a state limit on transfers. Refills are valid for a year from the date written. A pharmacist may dispense up to a ninety-day supply of a non-controlled maintenance medicine when the prescription allows. Louisiana has moved to require electronic prescribing of controlled substances; check the board for the current scope.
Controlled substances
Louisiana’s Prescription Monitoring Program, operated by the Board of Pharmacy, must be checked by prescribers before prescribing opioids and other controlled substances in most situations, and pharmacies report every controlled dispensing. First opioid prescriptions for acute pain are limited to a seven-day supply, with exceptions the prescriber documents. Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled; Schedule III to V may be refilled up to five times within six months. Gabapentin was not scheduled in Louisiana when this guide was checked. A Schedule II prescription may be transferred electronically once under the federal rule.
What a pharmacist can prescribe or furnish
Louisiana pharmacists may dispense naloxone under a standing order, administer vaccines, and manage drug therapy under collaborative agreements with physicians in defined settings. Louisiana does not let pharmacists prescribe hormonal contraception. Services vary by pharmacy.
Insulin and cost-sharing caps
Louisiana caps cost-sharing for insulin on state-regulated health plans at a fixed amount per thirty-day supply under a 2022 law; it does not apply to self-funded employer plans or to patients paying cash. The federal Medicare Part D cap applies to Part D plans. For cash-paying patients no cap applies.
Veterinary prescriptions
A veterinarian’s prescription for a human drug is filled by a Louisiana pharmacy under the same rules as any outside prescription. The Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine requires a veterinarian-client-patient relationship before prescribing, and veterinarians provide prescriptions on request so that clients can fill them elsewhere.
