Pharmacy rules in Kansas
Kansas allows generic substitution unless the prescriber indicates the brand is required, runs the K-TRACS monitoring program through its Board of Pharmacy, does not let pharmacists prescribe contraception, and had no state insulin cap in force when this guide was checked.
Kansas State Board of Pharmacy: licence lookup and complaintsGeneric substitution
A Kansas pharmacist may substitute a less expensive generic equivalent unless the prescriber has indicated on the prescription, or electronically, that the brand is required. The pharmacist must tell the patient about the substitution, and the patient may refuse it and pay for the brand. Substitution follows the FDA’s therapeutic equivalence list, and interchangeable biological products may be substituted with notice to the prescriber.
Moving a prescription between pharmacies
Non-controlled prescriptions can be transferred between Kansas pharmacies without a state limit on transfers. Refills are valid for a year from the date written. A pharmacist may dispense up to a ninety-day supply of a non-controlled maintenance medicine when the prescription allows. Check the board for the current electronic-prescribing requirements for controlled substances.
Controlled substances
K-TRACS, the Kansas prescription monitoring program run by the Board of Pharmacy, collects every controlled dispensing and is available to prescribers and pharmacists to check before prescribing or dispensing. Opioid prescribing for acute pain follows guidelines that favor short initial supplies. Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled; Schedule III to V may be refilled up to five times within six months. Gabapentin was not scheduled in Kansas when this guide was checked. A Schedule II prescription may be transferred electronically once under the federal rule.
What a pharmacist can prescribe or furnish
Kansas pharmacists may dispense naloxone under a statewide protocol, administer vaccines, and manage drug therapy under collaborative agreements with physicians. Kansas does not let pharmacists prescribe hormonal contraception. Services vary by pharmacy.
Insulin and cost-sharing caps
Kansas had no state insulin copay cap in force when this guide was checked. The federal Medicare Part D insulin cap applies to Part D plans, and manufacturer self-pay programs apply regardless of state. For cash-paying patients no cap applies.
Veterinary prescriptions
A veterinarian’s prescription for a human drug is filled by a Kansas pharmacy under the same rules as any outside prescription. The Kansas Board of Veterinary Examiners requires a veterinarian-client-patient relationship before prescribing, and veterinarians provide prescriptions on request so that clients can fill them elsewhere.
