Pharmacy rules in Alaska
Alaska limits first opioid prescriptions to a seven-day supply, requires a check of its monitoring program before many controlled prescriptions, relies heavily on mail-order and remote dispensing in rural areas, does not let pharmacists prescribe contraception, and had no state insulin cap in force when this guide was checked.
Alaska Board of Pharmacy (Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing): licence lookup and complaintsGeneric substitution
An Alaska pharmacist may substitute a less expensive generic equivalent unless the prescriber has indicated on the prescription, or electronically, that the brand is required. The pharmacist must tell the patient about the substitution, and the patient may refuse it and pay for the brand. Substitution follows the FDA’s therapeutic equivalence list, and interchangeable biological products may be substituted with notice to the prescriber.
Moving a prescription between pharmacies
Non-controlled prescriptions can be transferred between Alaska pharmacies without a state limit on transfers. Refills are valid for a year from the date written. A pharmacist may dispense up to a ninety-day supply of a non-controlled maintenance medicine when the prescription allows. Many Alaskans in rural communities fill prescriptions by mail or through remote dispensing sites, which follow the same transfer rules. Check the board for the current electronic-prescribing requirements for controlled substances.
Controlled substances
Alaska’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, run by the Board of Pharmacy, must be checked by prescribers before prescribing opioids and other controlled substances in most situations. First opioid prescriptions for acute pain are limited to a seven-day supply, with exceptions the prescriber documents. Gabapentin was not scheduled in Alaska when this guide was checked. Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled; Schedule III to V may be refilled up to five times within six months. A Schedule II prescription may be transferred electronically once under the federal rule.
What a pharmacist can prescribe or furnish
Alaska pharmacists may dispense naloxone, administer vaccines, and manage drug therapy under collaborative agreements with prescribers. Alaska does not let pharmacists prescribe hormonal contraception. Services vary by pharmacy.
Insulin and cost-sharing caps
Alaska had no state insulin copay cap in force when this guide was checked. The federal Medicare Part D insulin cap applies to Part D plans, and manufacturer self-pay programs apply regardless of state. For cash-paying patients no cap applies, which is where comparing pharmacies, including mail-order pharmacies, matters.
Veterinary prescriptions
A veterinarian’s prescription for a human drug is filled by an Alaska pharmacy under the same rules as any outside prescription. The Alaska Board of Veterinary Examiners requires a veterinarian-client-patient relationship before prescribing, and veterinarians provide prescriptions on request so that clients can fill them elsewhere.
