Tramadol
Ultram (human) · generic tramadol
Tramadol is a human pain medicine that vets prescribe for dogs after surgery and for chronic pain, usually alongside an anti-inflammatory. It is a controlled substance, which affects how prescriptions are written and filled, and any pharmacy that dispenses it for people can fill a vet’s prescription.
What it is used for
Tramadol acts weakly on opioid receptors and on serotonin and norepinephrine. In dogs its pain-relieving effect is modest and shorter-lived than in people, and recent veterinary studies have questioned how much it helps arthritis on its own, so vets now tend to use it as an add-on to an NSAID or gabapentin rather than alone. It is also used in cats at lower doses, where it is bitter and often compounded.
As a Schedule IV controlled substance, tramadol prescriptions carry limits on refills and transfers, must usually be filled within a set time, and in many states must be sent electronically; the pharmacy will ask for the pet owner’s identification as it would for a person.
Safety points that differ from human use
- Combining tramadol with fluoxetine, clomipramine, trazodone or MAO-inhibiting flea products raises the risk of serotonin syndrome; the vet needs the full medicine list.
- Human tramadol liquids and combination products (with acetaminophen) must not be used in pets unless the vet has specifically prescribed them; acetaminophen is lethal to cats.
- Sedation, constipation and, rarely, seizures at high doses are the effects to watch; store it securely, as it is a drug of abuse in people.
- Tablets (human)
- Compounded capsules and flavoured liquids for cats and small dogs
- 50 mg tablets
- Compounded strengths to the vet’s prescription
Why the cash price varies
Tramadol tablets are a cheap generic, so the cash price is the dispensing fee, but controlled-substance handling and a pharmacy’s policy on filling veterinary controlled prescriptions affect whether it will fill at all. Compounded cat preparations cost more and are made to order.
How to pay less
- Ask the vet whether the plain human tablet is appropriate for your dog’s weight.
- Fill at a pharmacy that will keep filling it, since controlled prescriptions cannot be moved freely.
- Ask whether tramadol is on the pharmacy’s flat-price generic list.
- Upload the prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote. You pay the pharmacy directly.
Questions for your vet
- Is tramadol the main pain relief or an add-on, and what else is my pet getting?
- Is it safe with my pet’s other medicines and flea treatment?
- How is the prescription being sent, and which pharmacies can fill it?
- What signs mean the dose is too high?
- For a cat, will it need compounding?
Rules on refills, transfers and controlled substances differ by state; see pharmacy rules by state.
How Script Unlock gets you a cash price for your pet’s tramadol prescription
Prices on this site come from pharmacies responding to a real prescription. We do not publish estimated, average or "typical" prices, because none of those would be your price.
- 1You upload your prescription
A photo of your your pet’s tramadol prescription prescription is enough. Nothing is sold on the site; you are asking pharmacies to quote.
- 2Licensed pharmacies respond
Pharmacies that Script Unlock has verified see the request and each can reply with its own cash price for your exact drug, strength and quantity.
- 3You choose and pay the pharmacy
You compare the responses, pick a pharmacy, and pay that pharmacy directly when you collect. Script Unlock never takes a patient payment and never sets the price.
