Gabapentin vs tramadol for dog pain: compared

Gabapentin and tramadol are both human medicines vets prescribe for pain in dogs, often alongside an anti-inflammatory. Gabapentin suits nerve and long-term pain and is also used to calm dogs before vet visits; tramadol’s pain relief in dogs is less reliable than once thought.

    How well they work

Gabapentin is widely used for nerve-related and chronic pain, usually added to an anti-inflammatory rather than used alone. Tramadol was long a staple, but dogs make little of its main active form, and studies of arthritis pain have shown limited benefit, so many vets now use it only in specific situations.

    A critical safety point

Some human gabapentin liquids contain xylitol, a sweetener that is poisonous to dogs. Only use the product your vet specifies, and check with the pharmacist when filling a human prescription for your dog.

    Side effects and interactions

Gabapentin commonly causes sleepiness and wobbliness, especially at first, and should be tapered rather than stopped suddenly after long use. Tramadol can cause sedation, constipation or agitation, and combining it with trazodone, fluoxetine, clomipramine or selegiline risks serotonin syndrome.

    Combining with anti-inflammatories

For arthritis, a dog anti-inflammatory such as carprofen or meloxicam is usually the backbone of treatment, with gabapentin added for extra relief. Never give your dog human pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen.

    Controlled medicines

Tramadol is a controlled substance nationwide, and gabapentin is controlled in some states, which affects refills. See our gabapentin by state table.

    Missed doses and first days

Give a missed dose when you remember unless the next one is near, and never double up. Sleepiness and wobbliness are strongest when starting or after a dose increase, so watch your dog on stairs and around pools until you know how it responds.

    Questions for your vet

    • Is my dog’s pain the kind gabapentin helps?
    • Should an anti-inflammatory be part of the plan?
    • Do any of my dog’s medicines interact with tramadol?
