Doxycycline
generic doxycycline (human)
Doxycycline is the antibiotic vets use for tick-borne diseases such as Lyme and ehrlichiosis, for respiratory infections in cats, for heartworm treatment protocols and for some skin and urinary infections. It is a human generic that any pharmacy can fill.
What it is used for
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic with a broad range, and it is the treatment of choice for the infections ticks carry, which makes it one of the most prescribed drugs in dogs in tick country. It is part of the standard heartworm treatment protocol in dogs, treats Mycoplasma and Bordetella infections in cats, and is used for some skin infections and periodontal disease.
Courses run from ten days to several weeks. The hyclate and monohydrate salts dispensed for people are both used; the vet writes a dose by weight and the pharmacy dispenses a matching human strength.
Safety points that differ from human use
- Cats: doxycycline tablets or capsules can lodge in the oesophagus and cause severe strictures. Cats should be given a liquid form, or a tablet followed immediately by water or food; the vet will specify.
- Give with food to reduce vomiting; do not give with dairy, calcium or iron supplements, which bind it.
- It can cause sun sensitivity and is avoided in young growing animals and in pregnancy because it affects developing teeth and bone.
- Capsules and tablets (hyclate or monohydrate)
- Oral suspension (human)
- Compounded flavoured liquids for cats
- 50, 75 and 100 mg capsules and tablets
- Suspension 25 mg per 5 mL
The human suspension is often the right form for cats; compounders also make liquids and small capsules.
Why the cash price varies
Doxycycline is a generic whose price has swung over the years, and the hyclate and monohydrate salts, and capsules versus tablets, are often priced very differently at the same pharmacy even though a vet usually accepts either. A prescription that allows either salt lets the pharmacy use the cheapest. The human suspension and compounded cat liquids cost more.
How to pay less
- Ask the vet to write the prescription so that either hyclate or monohydrate may be dispensed.
- Ask the pharmacy to quote both salts and both capsule and tablet forms.
- For a long tick-disease course, ask for the whole course in one prescription.
- Upload the prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote. You pay the pharmacy directly.
Questions for your vet
- Which form is right for my cat, and how do I give it safely?
- Can either doxycycline salt be dispensed?
- How long is the course for this infection?
- Should I give it with food, and what should I avoid giving with it?
- Will my pet need a recheck or repeat test afterwards?

How Script Unlock gets you a cash price for your pet’s doxycycline prescription
Prices on this site come from pharmacies responding to a real prescription. We do not publish estimated, average or "typical" prices, because none of those would be your price.
- 1You upload your prescription
A photo of your your pet’s doxycycline prescription prescription is enough. Nothing is sold on the site; you are asking pharmacies to quote.
- 2Licensed pharmacies respond
Pharmacies that Script Unlock has verified see the request and each can reply with its own cash price for your exact drug, strength and quantity.
- 3You choose and pay the pharmacy
You compare the responses, pick a pharmacy, and pay that pharmacy directly when you collect. Script Unlock never takes a patient payment and never sets the price.
