Amoxicillin-clavulanate
Clavamox (veterinary) · Augmentin (human) · generic amoxicillin-clavulanate
Amoxicillin-clavulanate is the most prescribed antibiotic in small-animal practice, for skin, urinary, dental and wound infections. Clavamox is the veterinary version; the human tablets are the same combination and a pharmacy can fill a vet’s prescription for them at matching strengths.
What it is used for
Amoxicillin kills many common bacteria, and clavulanate protects it from the enzymes that some bacteria use to resist it. Vets use the combination for skin infections and abscesses, bladder infections, dental infections, respiratory infections and wounds, usually for one to two weeks, and sometimes longer for skin disease.
Clavamox comes as tablets and a liquid dosed for cats and small dogs. The human products contain the same two drugs; a vet can prescribe a human tablet strength that matches a dog’s weight, which a human pharmacy fills from stock. Vomiting and diarrhoea are the common effects, usually eased by giving it with food.
Safety points that differ from human use
- Human liquid amoxicillin-clavulanate is dosed in a different ratio and strength from Clavamox drops; a vet who wants the human liquid will specify it, and a pharmacist should check the strength matches the prescription exactly.
- Finish the course as prescribed even if the infection looks better.
- Animals with a history of penicillin reactions should not receive it; stop and call the vet for hives, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
- Tablets (veterinary and human)
- Oral suspension (veterinary drops and human liquid)
- Chewable tablets (human)
- Human tablets 250/125, 500/125 and 875/125 mg
- Clavamox tablets in strengths for cats to large dogs
The human 875 mg tablet suits large dogs; small dogs and cats are usually dosed with Clavamox or a human chewable or liquid at the vet’s direction.
Why the cash price varies
Human amoxicillin-clavulanate is a generic that many pharmacies include on a flat-price antibiotic list; the cash price of a course is mostly the dispensing fee. Clavamox is a veterinary brand sold through vets and veterinary pharmacies at a higher price. The human liquid costs more than tablets because it is mixed at the pharmacy.
How to pay less
- Ask the vet whether a human tablet strength would suit your pet’s weight; for a large dog it almost always does.
- Ask whether the pharmacy has a flat-price antibiotic list that includes amoxicillin-clavulanate.
- Upload the prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote. You pay the pharmacy directly.
Questions for your vet
- Can the prescription be written for a human tablet strength?
- Should I give it with food?
- How many days, and what if my pet vomits a dose?
- What signs of an allergic reaction should I watch for?
- If the liquid is prescribed, which product and strength exactly?
