Vasopressin Analogs

    DesmopressinDesmopressin Acetate

Desmopressin (generic DDAVP) is a synthetic form of the hormone that makes the kidneys hold on to water, used for central diabetes insipidus and bedwetting. Tablets, nasal spray and injection are generic, but each form is labeled for different uses, and low blood sodium is the risk they share.

    About Desmopressin

Desmopressin makes the kidneys keep more water, so less urine is made. Tablets are labeled for central diabetes insipidus, the temporary thirst and heavy urination after head injury or pituitary surgery, and bedwetting from age 6; they do not work in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. The 10 mcg nasal spray is labeled only for central diabetes insipidus, from age 4, and not for bedwetting because low sodium is more likely. The injection treats central diabetes insipidus and bleeding in milder hemophilia A and type 1 von Willebrand disease.

Desmoda, a brand-only oral solution, is labeled for central diabetes insipidus. Nocdurna, sublingual tablets for adults who wake at least twice a night to urinate because they make too much urine at night, is listed as discontinued. Stimate, a stronger spray for bleeding disorders, has been unavailable since a 2020 recall; Ferring expects it back in US pharmacies from October 2026.

Drinking too much while desmopressin holds water in dilutes the blood’s sodium, causing headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion and, if severe, seizures. The injection and Nocdurna carry a boxed warning that severe low sodium can be life-threatening; the tablets and spray do not. The tablets, spray and injection are not used with low sodium now or in the past or with moderately or severely reduced kidney function, and the injection not with heart failure, loop diuretics or glucocorticoid steroids. Fluids are limited as directed.

    Taking Desmopressin

    How to take it
For diabetes insipidus, tablets are usually taken two or three times a day; for bedwetting, once at bedtime, with no drinks from an hour before until at least 8 hours after. Prime a new spray as directed, keep it upright, and discard it after 50 sprays. Take Desmoda on an empty stomach, an hour before or two hours after food.
    If you miss a dose
Take it as soon as you remember, unless the next dose is almost due; then skip it. Never take a double dose.
    Storage
Tablets at room temperature, away from heat, light and moisture. Sprays upright, refrigerated or at room temperature depending on the maker, so check your label. Discard opened Desmoda after 120 days.
    Interactions to know about
Tricyclic antidepressants, SSRIs, chlorpromazine, opioids, anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen, lamotrigine and carbamazepine raise the risk of low sodium. Tell the prescriber about fever, infection, vomiting or diarrhea, and get help at once for headache, vomiting, confusion, drowsiness or a seizure.

This summarizes the official prescribing information. Your prescriber’s and pharmacist’s instructions, and the leaflet that comes with your medicine, take priority.

Why the cash price for Desmopressin differs from pharmacy to pharmacy

Generic tablets have several makers, but DDAVP tablets are still sold, so a prescription that blocks substitution is priced as the brand. Doses run from half a 0.1 mg tablet twice a day to several 0.2 mg tablets at bedtime, so the tablet count drives the quote. The spray has few makers, and a bottle is discarded after 50 sprays, so the dose sets how many bottles you buy.

How Script Unlock gets you a cash price for Desmopressin

Prices on this site come from pharmacies responding to a real prescription. We do not publish estimated, average or "typical" prices, because none of those would be your price.

    1. 1You upload your prescription

    2. 2Licensed pharmacies respond

Pharmacies that Script Unlock has verified see the request and each can reply with its own cash price for your exact drug, strength and quantity.

    3. 3You choose and pay the pharmacy

You compare the responses, pick a pharmacy, and pay that pharmacy directly when you collect. Script Unlock never takes a patient payment and never sets the price.
