Clomipramine

Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant approved for separation anxiety in dogs as Clomicalm, and used off-label for compulsive behaviors and for spraying in cats. The human generic capsules contain the same drug, and a licensed pharmacy can fill them on a vet’s prescription.
What it is used for
Clomipramine, as Clomicalm, is approved in the United States for separation anxiety in dogs. It is used with behavior modification for separation anxiety, and off-label for compulsive disorders such as acral lick dermatitis and for urine marking in cats. Like fluoxetine it takes weeks to work and is given daily for months.
Clomicalm tablets are the veterinary product; the human generic capsules are the same drug and a vet can prescribe a strength that matches the animal’s weight. Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and increased thirst are among the effects the veterinary label lists, and the vet may check the heart in older animals because tricyclics affect heart rhythm.
Giving it to your pet
- How to give it
- Once or twice a day as prescribed, with or without food. Improvement in behavior builds over several weeks and works best alongside the behavior plan your vet recommends.
- If you miss a dose
- Give it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose; in that case skip the missed dose and carry on as usual. Never give two doses at once to catch up.
- Storage
- At room temperature in a closed container, away from moisture, and out of reach of pets and children.
- Call your vet if you see
- Sleepiness, vomiting, reduced appetite, increased thirst or constipation. Call your vet for any seizure, and check before combining it with fluoxetine, trazodone, tramadol or an amitraz tick collar, which can cause serotonin syndrome. Do not stop it suddenly.

Safety points that differ from human use
- Clomipramine must not be combined with MAO-inhibiting flea and tick products or selegiline, and it interacts with fluoxetine, trazodone and tramadol through serotonin effects.
- An overdose is dangerous because of effects on the heart; keep it away from pets and children and contact poison control if a quantity is eaten.
- It is used cautiously in animals with heart disease, glaucoma or urinary retention, and the veterinary label says it should not be given to dogs with a history of seizures.
