Oclacitinib (Apoquel)
Apoquel · Apoquel Chewable
Apoquel (oclacitinib) stops the itch of allergic skin disease in dogs within hours and has become one of the most prescribed drugs in veterinary dermatology. It is a veterinary-only product with no human equivalent, sold through vets and pharmacies that stock veterinary products, so a human pharmacy cannot fill it from stock.
What it is used for
Oclacitinib is a JAK inhibitor that blocks the signals driving itch and inflammation in atopic dermatitis and flea or food allergy. It works within a day, which is why it has displaced steroids for many itchy dogs, and it is given twice a day for two weeks and then once a day for as long as needed. It is approved for dogs over twelve months old.
Because it dampens part of the immune system, the vet will usually want blood tests on long-term use, and it is not used in dogs with serious infections or a history of certain cancers. Cytopoint, an injection given at the clinic every month or two, is the other modern itch treatment; the choice between them depends on the dog and on cost.
Safety points that differ from human use
- Not for dogs under twelve months, dogs with serious infections, or dogs being bred.
- Infections of the skin and ears, and warts, can appear more often on it; the vet will monitor and treat them.
- It is a prescription-only veterinary drug: no over-the-counter version exists, and products sold online as alternatives are not oclacitinib.
- Tablets
- Chewable tablets
- 3.6, 5.4 and 16 mg tablets
Tablets are dosed by weight; the chewable is a newer flavoured version of the same drug.
Why the cash price varies
Apoquel is a single-manufacturer veterinary brand, bought from veterinary distributors. Clinics, online veterinary pharmacies and the human pharmacies that stock veterinary products each set their own margin, and the quote depends on strength and quantity; for a dog on it long term, larger bottles and a written prescription you can take anywhere are what move the price. The manufacturer runs a rebate programme at times.
How to pay less
- Ask the vet for a written prescription so you can compare the clinic with a pharmacy that stocks veterinary products.
- For long-term use, ask about the largest quantity per fill.
- Ask the vet to compare the cost of Apoquel against Cytopoint injections for your dog over a year.
- Upload the prescription to Script Unlock; pharmacies that carry or can order veterinary products can quote. You pay the pharmacy directly.
Questions for your vet
- Is this for a flare or for long-term control, and what is the plan?
- What monitoring does my dog need on long-term Apoquel?
- Apoquel or Cytopoint for my dog?
- What should I do about recurring skin or ear infections while on it?
- Is there an allergy work-up that could reduce the need for it?
Rules on refills, transfers and controlled substances differ by state; see pharmacy rules by state.
