MinocyclineMinocycline Hydrochloride
Minocycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic. Generic capsules and tablets treat many infections and help severe acne, generic extended-release tablets treat inflammatory acne from age 12, and brand-only Emrosi capsules and Zilxi foam treat rosacea in adults, while Amzeeq foam treats acne from age 9. It can permanently discolor developing teeth, so it is avoided before age 8 unless other drugs are unlikely to work or cannot be used.

Generic capsules (rated equivalent to Minocin, still listed), tablets and extended-release tablets are sold; Solodyn, Minolira and Ximino are listed as discontinued. Emrosi, Amzeeq and Zilxi have no approved generic.
About Minocycline
Plain capsules and tablets are labeled for many infections, among them Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Mycoplasma pneumonia, chlamydia and, when penicillin cannot be used, syphilis and gonorrhea; for clearing meningococcus from carriers without symptoms; and, alongside other treatment, for severe acne. Adults usually take 200 mg, then 100 mg every 12 hours; children over 8 take 4 mg per kg, then 2 mg per kg every 12 hours. Extended-release tablets treat only the inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne, from age 12, at about 1 mg per kg once a day for 12 weeks; they are not for infections, and safety beyond 12 weeks is not established. Emrosi, a 40 mg extended-release capsule approved in November 2024, and Zilxi, a 1.5 percent foam, treat inflammatory rosacea lesions in adults; Amzeeq, a 4 percent foam, treats inflammatory acne from age 9.
Taken during tooth development, from the second half of pregnancy to age 8, minocycline can permanently discolor teeth, and it can harm an unborn baby. Lightheadedness, dizziness and vertigo can occur, and people who have them are cautioned about driving or using hazardous machinery. It can raise pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension), with headache, blurred or double vision and possible permanent vision loss; women of childbearing age who are overweight or have had it before are at higher risk, and isotretinoin is avoided with it. It is stopped at once for signs of an autoimmune syndrome, such as a lupus-like syndrome, autoimmune hepatitis, vasculitis or serum sickness, or of a serious skin or allergic reaction such as DRESS. Other warnings cover liver injury, C. difficile diarrhea, exaggerated sunburn, darkening of the skin, nails, teeth or bone, and, in significant kidney impairment, a buildup of waste in the blood. The only contraindication is allergy to a tetracycline. Headache, tiredness, dizziness and itching are the most common side effects of the acne tablets.
The forms are not interchangeable. Extended-release tablets and capsules are swallowed whole, never chewed, crushed or split; the Solodyn, Minolira and Ximino extended-release brands are listed as discontinued, and generic extended-release tablets are sold. The foams are flammable, so avoid fire, flame and smoking during and right after application. Pharmacies keep them refrigerated until dispensed; at home they are kept below 77°F (25°C), not in the refrigerator, for up to 90 days. Minocycline may make hormonal birth control less effective, so another method is advised.
Taking Minocycline
- How to take it
- Plain capsules and tablets are taken every 12 hours (sometimes every 6 hours), extended-release forms once a day, with or without food; with food, extended-release forms are less likely to irritate the throat. Take each dose with a full glass of water and swallow it whole. Apply foam once a day at about the same time, at least an hour before bedtime, and do not bathe, shower or swim for an hour afterward.
- If you miss a dose
- Take it when you remember, unless the next dose is almost due; then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
- Storage
- Capsules and tablets at room temperature in the original container, tightly closed, away from light, heat and moisture. Keep foam below 77°F (25°C), out of the refrigerator, for up to 90 days; never puncture or burn the can.
- Interactions to know about
- Take antacids containing aluminum, calcium or magnesium, calcium supplements and magnesium laxatives 1 to 2 hours before or after it, and iron products 3 hours before or 2 hours after. Isotretinoin and penicillin are avoided, and blood thinner doses may need lowering.
This summarizes the official prescribing information. Your prescriber’s and pharmacist’s instructions, and the leaflet that comes with your medicine, take priority.
Why the cash price for Minocycline differs from pharmacy to pharmacy
Plain generic capsules and tablets cost pharmacies little, so a quote is mostly the dispensing fee and markup. Generic extended-release tablets come in eight weight-based strengths, and a pharmacy may stock only some, so one strength can be quoted differently from another; capsules, tablets and extended-release tablets are not swapped for one another.
Emrosi, Amzeeq and Zilxi are brand-only and priced as brands, and the foams are kept refrigerated until dispensed, so not every pharmacy has them on hand.

Ways to pay less for Minocycline without insurance
- Ask for generic substitution, and make sure the prescription does not block it.
- For acne, ask the prescriber whether plain generic minocycline or doxycycline would suit you instead of an extended-release tablet.
- For extended-release tablets, confirm the pharmacy stocks your strength, and ask about filling the twelve-week course at once rather than monthly.
- For Emrosi, Amzeeq or Zilxi, ask the maker whether a savings program applies to someone paying cash; many copay cards require commercial insurance.
- Upload the prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote their cash price. You pay the pharmacy directly.
