Mixed Amphetamine SaltsAmphetamine/ Dextroamphetamine
Mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall tablets; Adderall XR and Mydayis capsules) are stimulants for ADHD, and the tablets also treat narcolepsy. They are Schedule II, so every fill needs a new prescription, and carry a boxed warning about abuse, misuse and addiction. All three have generics, the Adderall brand tablets are listed as discontinued, and the tablets were in shortage in October 2026.

Generic tablets come from many makers, and the Orange Book lists all Adderall brand tablets as discontinued. Adderall XR and Mydayis are not listed as discontinued, and their generics, from fewer makers, are each rated equivalent only to their own brand.
About Mixed Amphetamine Salts
Amphetamine is a stimulant whose exact action in ADHD is not known. The tablets treat ADHD (not recommended under age 3) and narcolepsy (not established under age 6); for ADHD, children aged 3 to 5 start at 2.5 mg a day and those 6 and older at 5 mg once or twice a day, raised weekly. Adderall XR, once a day on waking, treats ADHD from age 6: children 6 to 12 usually start at 10 mg (at most 30 mg), adolescents at 10 mg (20 mg after a week if needed) and adults at 20 mg, with lower doses in severe kidney impairment. Mydayis, whose effect can last up to 16 hours, treats ADHD from age 13: it starts at 12.5 mg (25 mg in some adults) and rises no faster than weekly, to at most 25 mg in adolescents and 50 mg in adults.
The boxed warning says amphetamine has a high potential for abuse and misuse that can lead to a substance use disorder, including addiction, and that misuse can cause overdose and death, so prescribers assess this risk before and during treatment; before starting they also screen for heart disease, a family history of sudden death, tics and risk factors for mania. It is avoided in serious heart disease, where sudden death has been reported, and blood pressure and heart rate, which it raises, are monitored; other warnings cover psychotic or manic symptoms, slowed growth in children, seizures, poor circulation in the fingers and toes, serotonin syndrome and tics. It must not be taken with or within 14 days of an MAO inhibitor. Loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, weight loss, stomach ache, dry mouth, headache and nervousness are common.
As a Schedule II drug it cannot be refilled. The products are not interchangeable, and Mydayis must not be substituted milligram for milligram for other amphetamine products. Since a 2025 FDA safety communication, the Adderall XR label notes higher drug levels and more side effects, including weight loss, in children under 6, for whom it is not approved. Breastfeeding is not recommended. The tablets were still on the FDA shortage list in October 2026.
Taking Mixed Amphetamine Salts
- How to take it
- Tablets: on waking, with any later doses 4 to 6 hours apart and none late in the evening. Capsules: once a day on waking, swallowed whole or opened and the whole contents sprinkled on applesauce and swallowed at once without chewing, never divided or stored; take Mydayis always with food or always without.
- If you miss a dose
- Tablets: take it when you remember, but not late in the day; skip it if it is almost evening. Adderall XR: a late dose can keep you awake, so ask the pharmacist. Mydayis: skip it rather than take it later in the day. Never take extra to make up for it.
- Storage
- At room temperature, away from light, in a safe place such as a locked cabinet. Use a take-back program; if none is available, mix unused medicine with dirt, cat litter or used coffee grounds, seal it in a plastic bag and put it in the household trash.
- Interactions to know about
- Never with or within 14 days of an MAO inhibitor, including linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. SSRIs, SNRIs, triptans and other serotonergic medicines add a risk of serotonin syndrome; CYP2D6 inhibitors and alkalinizing agents raise its levels, and acidifying agents lower them.
This summarizes the official prescribing information. Your prescriber’s and pharmacist’s instructions, and the leaflet that comes with your medicine, take priority.
Why the cash price for Mixed Amphetamine Salts differs from pharmacy to pharmacy
Generic tablets have many makers, so quotes differ mainly by fee and markup; generic Adderall XR and Mydayis have fewer makers, and their brands are priced as brands. A generic replaces only the product it is rated against, so an Adderall XR prescription cannot be filled with Mydayis or its generics, or the reverse.
Schedule II drugs are ordered on a special DEA form from wholesalers that must flag unusual orders and can set their own thresholds, so during the shortage a pharmacy may hold only some strengths, fill part of a prescription or decline it.
Upload it and licensed pharmacies reply with their own cash price. You pay the pharmacy, not us.
Ways to pay less for Mixed Amphetamine Salts without insurance
- Confirm the pharmacy has your exact product and strength before the prescription is sent, since an unfilled electronic prescription can be transferred only once.
- Ask for generic substitution, and make sure the prescription does not name the brand only.
- Ask for a partial fill if you want fewer at first; where state law allows, the rest can be collected within 30 days of the date written.
- For the Adderall XR or Mydayis brand, ask the maker whether its savings program applies to someone paying cash.
- Upload the prescription to Script Unlock so licensed pharmacies can quote their cash price. You pay the pharmacy directly.
