    Gabapentin vs trazodone for dogs

Gabapentin and trazodone are human medicines that vets prescribe constantly for dogs, often together. Gabapentin is mainly for nerve and chronic pain; trazodone is mainly for situational anxiety and calm during recovery. Both are inexpensive generics any pharmacy can fill, with one important safety catch for liquids.

    Why vets often prescribe both

The two work differently and complement each other: gabapentin calms nerve signalling and pain, and trazodone acts on serotonin to take the edge off fear. A common plan for a dog that panics at the vet is a dose of each a couple of hours before the visit. Given together they add to each other’s sleepiness, so the vet sets the doses with that in mind. Trazodone needs care with other serotonin-affecting medicines, such as fluoxetine or tramadol.

    Filling the prescription

Both are generic human drugs, so any pharmacy can fill them on your vet’s prescription, and cash prices vary between pharmacies. Use capsules or tablets for gabapentin, or a compounded xylitol-free liquid, and never the human oral solution unless the pharmacist confirms it contains no xylitol. Where gabapentin is a controlled substance, the prescription has refill limits and may not transfer between pharmacies; our state guides list which states schedule it.

    How quickly they work

Trazodone usually takes effect within one to two hours, so it is given ahead of a predictable event such as a vet visit or fireworks. Gabapentin’s calming effect comes on over a similar time, but for chronic pain it can take days to weeks of regular dosing, and after long use it is reduced gradually rather than stopped, to avoid rebound pain or, in dogs with epilepsy, seizures.

    Questions for your vet

    • Which problem is each medicine for in my dog?
    • Can they be given together, and at what times?
    • Is gabapentin a controlled substance in my state?
    • Which form avoids xylitol for my dog?
