How Pharmacy Bidding Works
Real licensed pharmacies compete for your prescription in real time. You pick the lowest locked price. Patients save an average of 65% vs retail — some save over 90%.
The Three Steps
Most patients are from upload to locked bid in under an hour.
1Upload Your Prescription
Three ways to get your script onto the platform — every one of them encrypted.
Snap a photo or upload a PDF from your phone or desktop. We accept JPG, PNG, HEIC, and PDF up to 10 MB.
Have your prescriber send the prescription directly via Surescripts to your ScriptUnlock account — no photos needed.
Every upload is encrypted with TLS 1.3 in transit and AES-256 at rest. Only verified pharmacies bidding on your prescription can see it.
2Pharmacies Bid — Usually Within Minutes
Real, licensed pharmacies compete against each other in real time.
First bids typically arrive within 5–15 minutes. By the 1-hour mark, most prescriptions have 4–8 competing bids. The auction stays open up to 24 hours.
Independent pharmacies, regional chains, and licensed compounding pharmacies. Every bidder is verified against the NPI registry and state board licensure.
Pharmacies see the drug, dose, quantity, and ZIP code — only the information needed to quote an accurate price. Your name, contact details, and full address are hidden until you accept a bid.
3Pick the Lowest (or the One That Fits)
Locked prices, no surprises. You decide what 'best' means.
Sort by price, distance, pharmacy rating, fulfillment speed, or delivery option. Most patients sort by price — but if a pharmacy 2 miles closer is only $3 more, that's your call.
When you accept a bid, the price is contractually locked. The pharmacy cannot quote you one number and charge another at pickup. What you see is what you pay — that's the deal.
Show your ID, confirm your prescription, pay the locked price. The transaction is settled in ScriptUnlock's escrow and released to the pharmacy after you confirm receipt. If anything is wrong with the medication, the funds stay protected until it's resolved.
Why Pharmacies Actually Compete For You
Independent and regional pharmacies are squeezed by PBM contracts that dictate margins on insured prescriptions — often making them lose money on every fill. Cash-pay patients are different. There's no PBM in the middle, no DIR fee clawback, no formulary game. The pharmacy sets the price, you pay it, the transaction is clean.
The economics for the pharmacy
A typical independent pharmacy might pay $8 wholesale for a 30-day supply of a generic. The PBM-dictated insured reimbursement is sometimes $9 — a $1 gross margin that doesn't cover the dispensing cost.
On a cash-pay ScriptUnlock bid, the same pharmacy might quote $18 — still a great deal for the patient (vs. $40+ retail or a $25 copay), and now the pharmacy is making real margin on a clean transaction.
This is why independent pharmacies are the most aggressive bidders on the platform — and why they often beat the big chains by a wide margin.
The economics for you
The patient who would have paid a $25 copay (or $40+ retail) gets the medication for $18. The pharmacy makes more margin than they would have on the insurance fill. Everybody wins — except the PBM, which is cut out entirely.
This is the whole game: PBMs add cost without adding value. When you and the pharmacy transact directly, the savings are shared between you.
Patients save an average of 65% vs retail on cash-pay bids. On generics, savings of 90%+ are common.
Is It Safe?
Four pillars protect every prescription on ScriptUnlock. Read these — they're the difference between a real bidding platform and a coupon scraper.
HIPAA-Compliant by Design
Every component — uploads, bid transmissions, payment, messaging — is HIPAA-compliant. TLS 1.3 in transit, AES-256 at rest, Business Associate Agreements with every pharmacy partner.
Licensed Pharmacies Only
Every bidding pharmacy holds an active state board license. We re-verify licensure quarterly. If a pharmacy's license lapses or is suspended, they're removed from the network immediately.
NPI Registry Validation
Every pharmacy is matched to its NPI (National Provider Identifier) in the CMS registry. This is the same identifier insurance companies use to verify pharmacies — we use it to make sure every bid comes from a real, accountable US pharmacy.
We Don't Sell Your Data
Unlike GoodRx (fined $1.5M by the FTC in 2023 for sharing health data with advertisers), ScriptUnlock never sells, rents, or shares your prescription data with marketers, PBMs, or data brokers. Your prescriptions are not a product.
