About Levothyroxine
Levothyroxine replaces the hormone the thyroid gland is not making enough of. It is one of the most prescribed drugs in the country and is usually taken for life. Because the body is sensitive to small changes in thyroid hormone, it is dosed in micrograms across a dozen tablet strengths, and the dose is adjusted against a blood test rather than symptoms alone.
Absorption is easily disturbed. It is taken on an empty stomach, usually first thing in the morning, well apart from food, coffee, calcium, iron, antacids and some other medicines. The FDA considers levothyroxine a narrow therapeutic index drug: different manufacturers’ tablets are approved as bioequivalent, but the tolerances are tight enough that many endocrinologists prefer a patient stay on one maker, and ask for a blood test a few weeks after any switch.
Tirosint is a liquid-filled capsule and Tirosint-SOL a solution; both avoid the fillers in tablets and are used for people with absorption problems or excipient sensitivities. They are priced as brand products.
