About Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin blocks HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol. Lower cholesterol production makes the liver pull more LDL out of the blood. It is classed as a moderate- to high-intensity statin depending on the dose, which is why it is often chosen for people who have already had a cardiovascular event or who have diabetes.
It is taken once daily at any time of day; unlike simvastatin it does not need to be taken in the evening. Most people have no side effects. Muscle aches are the most discussed, and they are less common than internet folklore suggests. Prescribers check liver enzymes at baseline and may check again if symptoms appear. Grapefruit in large quantities can raise atorvastatin levels, which is worth knowing but rarely a practical problem at normal intake.
